Im Zuge der fortschreitenden Globalisierung der Wirtschaft kooperieren Wirtschaftsakteure immer häufiger mit Partnern in anderen Teilen der Welt, die anderen kulturellen Rahmenbedingungen verpflichtet sind. Dabei treten oft Handlungs- und Normkonflikte auf. Das vorliegende Buch behandelt diese transkulturellen Wertekonflikte aus unterschiedlichen philosophischen und wirtschaftsethischen Perspektiven: Grundsatzfragen der Transkulturalität, wie die Gefahr des Verlusts des Fremden werden ebenso behandelt wie der mögliche Umgang mit transkulturellen Wertekonflikten oder die Frage nach einer ökonomischen Moral. Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt wird auf den Aspekt des Kulturwandels und (...) des Kulturrelativismus gelegt. DBS Think Tank IX was held on August 25–27, 2021 in Orlando FL with US based participants largely in person and overseas participants joining by video conferencing technology. The DBS Think Tank was founded in 2012 and provides an open platform where clinicians, engineers and researchers can freely discuss current and emerging deep brain stimulation technologies as well as the logistical and ethical issues facing the field. The consensus among the DBS Think Tank IX speakers was that DBS expanded in (...) its scope and has been applied to multiple brain disorders in an effort to modulate neural circuitry. After collectively sharing our experiences, it was estimated that globally more than 230,000 DBS devices have been implanted for neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders. As such, this year’s meeting was focused on advances in the following areas: neuromodulation in Europe, Asia and Australia; cutting-edge technologies, neuroethics, interventional psychiatry, adaptive DBS, neuromodulation for pain, network neuromodulation for epilepsy and neuromodulation for traumatic brain injury. En las interpretaciones más relevantes se asume que el asunto principal que trata Tocqueville en La Democracia en América es el de la tensión entre igualdad y libertad. El presente artículo sugiere que hay otro tema más importante y con frecuencia ignorado: a saber, el del sujeto democrático. Tocqueville aborda la cuestión criticando las ilusiones del individualismo y esbozando las líneas maestras de una antroponomía democrática.

A kolozsvári filozófus az elmúlt három esztendőben született tanulmányait egybe szerkesztve készítette új könyvét. Célja mintegy in statu nascendi bemutatni a politikai filozófiát, hogyan reflektálnak a kortárs politikai filozófiák a társadalmat érő politikai kihívásokra. Címéhez híven valóban egyfajta bevezetés Korunk politikai filozófiájába, mégpedig olyan csomóponti és tagadhatatlanul ma is aktuális, eleven témák kapcsán, mint az emberi jogok doktrínája, nemzeti szuverenitás vs. Európai integráció, multikulturalizmus és a bevándorlás problémája. A szerző legfőbb eszmei iránytűje ezúttal is Hannah Arendt, rá hivatkozva vallja, hogy (...) a politikában maximum arra törekedhetünk, hogy véleményünk reprezentatív legyen. A teljes igazság platóni ideájának megragadása helyett a filozófus feladat, hogy a szókratészi kételyt tanítsa, a politikai filozófia értelme pedig annak megmutatása, hogy ahogyan mi magunk a politikáról gondolkodunk, minden, csak nem evidens. A nyolc tanulmány bibliográfiával és névmutatóval kiegészített gyűjteménye elsősorban a szakemberekhez szól, de a saját politikai meggyőződéseik megkérdőjelezésére nyitott művelt nagyközönségnek is ajánlható. Neurocognitive enhancement, or cosmetic neurology, offers the prospect of improving the learning, memory and attention skills of healthy individuals well beyond the normal human range. Much has been written about the ethics of such enhancement, but policy-makers in the USA, the UK and Europe have been reluctant to legislate in this rapidly developing field. However, the possibility of discrimination by employers and insurers against individuals who choose not to engage in such enhancement is a serious threat worthy of legislative intervention. (...) While lawmakers should not prevent individuals from freely pursuing neurocognitive enhancement, they should act to ensure that such enhancement is not coerced. This paper offers one model for such legislation, based upon a proposed US law, the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008, to address precisely this particular pitfall of the impending neuroscience revolution. The theory of emotion developed by William James has been subject to four criticisms. First, it is held that Jamesian emotion is without function, that it plays no role in cognition and behavior. Second, that James ignores the role of experience in emotion. Third, that James overstated the role of physical processes in emotion. Fourth, that James’ theory of emotion has been experimentally demonstrated to be false. A fifth point, less an explicit criticism than an assumption, holds that James has (...) nothing to offer a social psychology of emotions. It will be shown in this paper that not one of these criticisms of James' theory of emotion can be sustianed. (shrink)

Julian Cole argues that mathematical domains are the products of social construction. This view has an initial appeal in that it seems to salvage much that is good about traditional platonistic realism without taking on the ontological baggage. However, it also has problems. After a brief sketch of social constructivist theories and Cole’s philosophy of mathematics, I evaluate the arguments in favor of social constructivism. I also discuss two substantial problems with the theory. I argue that unless and until social (...) constructivists can address the two concerns, we have reason to be skeptical about social constructivism in the philosophy of mathematics. (shrink)

Tenseless theories of time entail that the only temporal properties exemplified by events are earlier than, simultaneous with, and later than. Such an account seems to conflict with our common experience of time, which suggests that the present moment is ontologically unique and that time flows. Some have argued that only a tensed account of time, one in which past, present and future are objective properties, can do justice to our experience. Any theory that claims that the world is different (...) from how we experience it must nonetheless be consistent with the having of that experience. Accordingly, in this essay I defend the tenseless theory by arguing that it can indeed account for certain key features of our experience of time without recourse to tensed properties. (shrink)
